Local Information

Claverley is a delightful parish and village to the west of Bridgnorth on the Staffordshire border. At one time it was a large and important manor of around 23,000 acres belonging to the Saxon Earl Algar who died in 1059.

Claverley's church dates from around 1017. It boasts a wonderful frieze of knights on horseback just above the arcade on the north side of the nave. It is thought that the frieze dates back to the 1200’s and is believed by some to illustrate a poem by the 4th-century Roman poet Prudentis. Others say that it is a scene from the Battle of Hastings. Also of interest is a 14th century cross that adjoins the large lych-gate. Originally this would have stood in the churchyard. Open daily 9am-5pm

The ancient town of Bridgnorth is about 5 miles west of Claverley straddling the spectacular River Severn. It comprises Low Town and atop dramatic 110 foot sandstone cliffs, High Town. The two are linked by seven sets of historic steps, the famous funicular railway and by Cartway, a lovely, winding street steeped in history. The funicular is the oldest and steepest one of its kind inland and opened in 1892.

The Severn Valley Railway rides through 16 miles of spectacular countryside operating every weekend throughout the year and daily between May and the end of September. Stopping at Bewdley it runs between Kidderminster and Bridgnorth. It wouldn't take a great deal of imagination to think of Harry Potter's Hogwarts Express as you enjoy one of Britain's best steam train rides!
